As a former colony of the British Empire, Hong Kong had a democratic political system, unlike the socialist People’s Republic of China. However, after the handover of Hong Kong in 1997, the democratic system has been put in danger. Beforehand, China had agreed to uphold Hong Kong’s existing system with the “one country, two systems” principle at least for fifty years to come. Today, the 2019 Fugitive Offenders Amendment Bill has triggered protests, as demands for democratic reform and fear of losing autonomy loomed. With constant repression from the police force, conflicts between the protesters and the government of Hong Kong are unavoidable. Because of this ruging matter, the United Kingdom proposed a tripartisan meeting to alleviate Hong Kong’s crisis. Enforcing China’s sovereignty or protecting Hong Kong’s rights to practice democracy would be of the utmost importance as time gets closer to the ticking bomb of 2047.

Recent reports have the world’s eyes glued on Syria with the Syrian government asking for aid from the other sovereigns in an attempt to defend their borders from Turkey. Turkey’s military operations, namely Operation Peace Spring and Operation Olive Branch, have shaken Syria, and the world, with human rights violation allegations caused by their unauthorized military operations. The Kurds have suffered the most in this conflict with more than 300 civilian casualties, and the displacement of approximately 150,000 others. Thus falls on the United Nations Security Council’s shoulders the responsibility to seek to resolve this conflict, as another nation’s sovereignty has been threatened.

Preserving The World’s Rainforests :  The Dilemma of Palm Oil and Deforestation

Worldwide, demand for palm oil continues to rise due to its greater yield at a lower cost of production than other vegetable oils. In 2019, global consumption is expected to reach 75 million tons, or roughly 22 pounds of palm oil per person. The climate of the tropics offers perfect growth conditions for oil palms. Day after day, huge tracts of rainforest in Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa are being bulldozed or torched to make room for more plantations, releasing vast amounts of carbon into the atmosphere and causes threat to the living creature in the world. Therefore, this council is set with the purpose to address the dilemma of highly demanded palm oil and the spread of deforestation, preserve the world’s wildlife, and carbon management.

Women

In 2014, women only represent 3% of military personnel and 10% of police personnel in UN peacekeeping missions. Although the number is increasing, the scarcity of qualified women in peacekeeping operations can be linked to the neglection of women peacekeepers and women’s general disinterest of peacekeeping opportunities. A visible presence for women peacekeepers has been shown to make effective reform that is more likely capable for gaining trust in gathering intelligence, advancing stability, providing relief and rehabilitation for survivors of violence. This council is set with the purpose of addressing the needs of women in peacekeeping operations by reflecting to the need for some-gender peacekeepers and the challenges that will be faced by female peacekeepers.
